Perhaps it’s the Marable Manning retelling of Malcolm X that I’m currently reading. It could be that my new position allows me access to places I would never have considered as options. The 3.00 I’m currently carrying for my classes is part of it. And there’s my renewed relationship with my Lord.
One thing I know for sure: we got to do better.
As a community, as a family unit, as a country. As people.
My reading has taken to history. Along with Malcolm, I’m reading about Patti Lupone, Martin Luther King, and plowing through The Miseducation of the Negro.
I’m both frustrated and encouraged.
Frustrated because I walk my neighbourhood and see the pain and distress that needs to be addressed. I see people pass one another without so much as a hello. I see kids trying to grow too fast and adults too tired to slow them down.
But I’m encouraged because I know I can get only knees and talk to my Father and He will help me work it out. I see some kids who recognize that their litter is not mine and they will pick it up. I see a cop stop a teen to compliment him on his achievement in school. I see and can taste the hope that occurs when a change is on it’s way.
