*note: I received two meals complimentary for testing Home Chef. The following review are my own thoughts.
Home Delivery meals are the latest craze for some of my Facebook friends. After seeing posts from friends about chef-like meals, I was excited to give Home Chef a try.
Home Chef offers meals in 2, 4, or 6 portioned packs. Users have the option of setting a taste profile such as gluten-free, low carb, vegetarian, soy-free or nut-free meals. Once this is set, users can browse recipes. The recipes I ordered were Steak with Brown Butter Bordelaise and Oktoberfest Chicken Schnitzel. Once you have picked your recipe, select a delivery date of Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Don’t see anything that tickles your taste buds? No worries! You can skip a week – there’s no membership fee. Click order then wait for delivery.
The Pros of Home Chef:
The meals are tasty. The Mister wasn’t too fond of the steaks “I need a MAN sized steak” was his review. Despite his proclamation that the Panko breadcrumbs in the Schnitzel was “too much”, The Boy managed to scarf it down in four bites.
You really do feel like a chef while cooking. I have only had asparagus at weddings or when I’m at a fancy restaurant. After the ease of cooking asparagus with Home Chef, I have made it twice for dinner outside of the meal program.
Everything you need is in the box. For the recipes I cooked, the ingredients were separated into just the size needed to cook. For example, one recipe called for cooking wine and darn if a small bottle of wine wasn’t in the kit! The only thing you’ll need are kitchen staples: salt, pepper, olive oil cooking spray, and pots.
The recipes set the expectation. The difficulty of each recipe ranges from one spoon (easy) to three spoons (expert). Even the three spoon recipe wasn’t challenging, It was a matter of READING the recipe and following the easy to read directions which are in eye popping color photos.
Dinner is delivered to your front door. Again I stress, everything you need is right in the box. I’m not one to walk in the door and start cooking, but I was so excited that I didn’t have to measure and do too much prep that I didn’t change my work clothes before I started to cook.
The meals I tested were about an hour from start to finish. This includes things such as peeling potatoes, slicing Brussels sprouts, and preparing the dishes for baking some of the food.
You can lose weight with this product. I’ll explain more below.
There’s an app. If you like old fashioned recipe cards, there’s also recipe cards that are collected in a binder for future use. Easy peasy!
The Cons of Home Chef:
The meal is a true one and done. We enjoyed THAT meal, but that was it. I grew up with a working grandmother and mother. I’m a working mom. I would love to spend each evening in the kitchen crafting meals for the family, but realistically, I cannot. I normally cook enough on Sunday to last the week because our schedules are so crazy busy. It is easier to heat up a plate of leftovers for dinner. With Home Chef, we enjoyed a meal but I would still need to cook again the next day.
The meals come in 2, 4, or 6 portions. Since my daughter is on her own, I have three to cook for. I ordered the meals for two, thinking I would add a side salad to get more mileage. While I found the meal filling, my guys had other thoughts. They eat like it is about to be declared illegal. They wolfed down their meals, thanked me for dinner, but an hour later they were rooting around in the kitchen for chili I made earlier in the week.
Home Chef makes you realize JUST how much you overeat. This is a con because I felt like a Fat Mama Cheeseburger when I realized how much I actually overeat.
About Weight Loss
With any diet, moderation is necessary. Cooking the Home Chef meal, I realized that I don’t know a THING about portion control. In the past, I have been known to not eat until I get full but until I get tired. I was blissfully ignorant about how much food I actually consumed. I mean I joked about being a member of #TeamChunk, however, the times I was winded walking a flight of stairs were beginning to increase. Cooking with JUST the ingredients and portions provided I could see just how much I overate in the past.
Home Chef CAN feed a family of three that recognize portion control. My guys are going to have to learn to modify their diets (that thud was the sound of them falling over).
