Five For Friday: Heat Wave

1. I was slurring words and swore that a crushed Gatorade bottle was a box turtle. Apparently my lunch time habit of sitting in the sun and reading caught up with me and I was suffering from the heat. Let this be a warning that at NO age should you ignore the heat advisory warnings. Stay hydrated, wear light clothes, and stay out of the heat as much as possible.

There are five types of stress
Heat Stroke, is the most serious heat-related disorder. It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given
Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of the water and salt, usually through excessive sweating. Workers most prone to heat exhaustion are those that are elderly, have high blood pressure, and those working in a hot environment.
Heat syncope is a fainting (syncope) episode or dizziness that usually occurs with prolonged standing or sudden rising from a sitting or lying position. Factors that may contribute to heat syncope include dehydration and lack of acclimatization.
Heat cramps usually affect workers who sweat a lot during strenuous activity. This sweating depletes the body’s salt and moisture levels. Low salt levels in muscles causes painful cramps. Heat cramps may also be a symptom of heat exhaustion.
Heat rash is a skin irritation caused by excessive sweating during hot, humid weather.

2. I remember discovering Tricia Rose Burt when I got lost driving home from Valley Forge. Her word still resonate with me when I watch her performance.

3.

The 48 Laws of Power. This book used to be my go to for politics. Recent events made be download the book and dig into it again. The lessons I’m following first are

a. Keep your hands clean
b. Master the art of timing
c. Win through your actions, never through argument.

4. Watching Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin on CNN brought back my mixed feeling about the case. Fulton looked like incredulous as she repeatedly hammered the point that Trayvon was a child. A CHILD! The Trayvon Martin Foundation has been set up to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims, and to provide support and advocacy for those families, in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin. I can write a check and direct folks to the website but I need to do more. Next week I will list books that I believe a father and son or a mentor to boy should read together. More about this project will be posted Monday. If you know of a book that could help a man mentor a son, please leave the title in the comments.

5. I signed up to be a tutor of Adult Basic Education with the Delaware County Literacy Council. I take it for granted that I can and have escaped between the pages of a book. This is not the case for all The training is this Saturday, July 20th and also Saturday, July 27. Registration was due on the 17th but be like me and fall on the mercy of the volunteer coordinator for a spot. Hope to see you!

I’m serious about this heat. What tips can you give for helping other folks cool?
