Up to now, Amelie and The Jospehine Baker Story were the influences that had me contemplating a move to France. Amelie had me thinking I would work in a cafe filled with eccentric customers and that I would bicycle my way through town. The Jospehine Baker Story encouraged me with the outpouring of love shown to La Baker.
I now add Botswana to my list.
On Sunday, Philly’s own (and former classmate) Jill Scott headlined the new series No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency on HBO. Jilly from Philly has already got me through some rough times when Amy was too angry and Cassandra too mellow. Now I have a new reason to set my DVR for Sundays.
The scenery is gorgeous! The lush setting of Africa is a far cry from the naked women of the National Geographic shows I grew up watching. Jill is a superb actress, much better than the Creole Queen. If it wasn’t for the constant interruptions by well meaning family, I would still be in my trance.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Anika Noni Rose steals the show as the uptight secretary. She has some of the best lines and is an example of another actress that has mastered her craft.
Tune in Sundays for the show. It is a refreshing change from the bang bang of network shows.
I thought the show was really good. How many episodes are there going to be???
