Not a Fan

August 12, 2010

“To each his/her own. It’s just not for me.”

Says injured Iggles guard Todd Hereman

.
The not for me he’s referring to is this seasons True Blood and the story arc where Eric and Talbot engage in some guy on guy action.  I too turned my head when the two were together and The Mister threw a pillow at the TV asking if this was necessary.

Before you label us homophobic or leave a barrage of nasty comments, allow me to state my OPINION.

I got into True Blood when I read a comment on Facebook about Sookie Stackhouse being much smarter in the book.  Not really a fan of books turned into movies or TV shows, I read the first nine books of Charlaine Harris’ series because I’m a reader.  (I soon got bored.  It’s never a good idea to read a series back to back.  It become repetitious).

After I read the books, I borrowed the DVDs from the library and caught up on the series that everyone spent most of Sunday talking about.  Season One was entertaining, loosely following the book.  Like most people, I feel that Nelsan Ellis’ Lafayette Reynolds steals the show.  I’m also a fan of Kristen Bauer van Straten’s turn as Pam and I have a love/hate relationship with Rutina Wesley’s Tara. Sookie works my nerves because all she does is cry for “Billlllll!”

When Season Two started, I felt that Michelle Forbes was given crappy material to work with and that whole storyline was just HBO being overly gratuitous with sex.   What was the point of this season?  I’m still trying to figure that out.  The Mister feels that it jumped the shark.  Season Three and the introduction of werewolves has made me a fan again.

This past Sunday’s episode left me looking at the TV and asking Why?  Apparently, Hereman asked the same question via Twitter and caught Hell.  He later apologized and said he was being insensitive and tasteless for tweeting that he:

“caught up on Trueblood. Not a fan of how they get you hooked w/ 2 seasons then bring on barrage of homosexuality.”

Hereman was a bit careless in that he represents the Iggles, and his statement could be a reflection of them, but isn’t he entitled to his OPINION?  Not all TV is watchable and as a viewer, don’t we have a right to demand quality TV?  Wasn’t he just asking that HBO possibly give him, a paying subscriber, more quality?

A few Sundays ago, the Good Reverend Doctor preached that we allow too much of the world into church.  Women come in showing than necessary, spending more time tugging at their clothes than worshiping.  Men are using the time to scope out a date, and there are some (I’m sometimes in this category) who don’t portray that we are saved by our words or actions.  Holding a bible and singing hymns doesn’t always cover you.

As a parent, I agree with him.  Public displays of affection have gone from hand holding and a peck to all out groping.  Queenie says that weekends are spent cleaning up used condoms, beer bottles,  and underwear because teens use her secluded tree as a spot to hook up and hang out.  I remember an ad for American Movie Classics (before Mad Men and the other series they now show) that asked if we remembered when a kiss was a love scene.  Do you?

I thought this week’s episode was a wicked display of gratuity.  Eric and Talbot, I kind of understood the scene, but men with other men aren’t what I find entertaining.  Sookie and Bill in the closing scene, was unnecessary.  It did nothing to further the plot, and seemed tacked on.  Okay, Sookie took Bill back.  Sookie missed Bill.  Sookie gets it in.  Meh.

When did we allow group think to become our thoughts?  In a society where we can state our opinions in 140 characters, isn’t it possible that out of millions of people, Hereman wasn’t the only one who was uncomfortable by Sunday’s episode?  If Hereman is uncomfortable about men on men sex scenes, that’s his right!  I was uncomfortable with Sookie and Bill at the end.  Am I going to catch Hell for that?
