SOCS: Resolve to Take Nothing for Granted

January 1, 2012

I had every intention of writing out New Year’s resolutions, even asking my Facebook Buddies their thoughts.
Then I got caught up in a Mario Kart tournament with my kids and all thoughts about changing for 2012 went nowhere quick.

Unfortunately, the way news travels today makes it impossible not to follow the world.  Through a text message, I found out a man who was very dear to me passed away.

This man helped me navigate local politics and began to groom me or more responsibility within my party.  Death is not a something we run from, rather embrace because each person will die soon.  But the death of this man has touched me deeply. He was one off the few who could call me ‘kid’ and not receive a withering look.  His mind was sharp, three levels away when I was still stuck pondering the first question.

He was able to see the forest when I was stuck looking at trees.  When I harbor anger or the grudge I have been working through, he was already looking for the weak point of my opponent and preparing me or my next steps.

This is but a small token to celebrate a man who didn’t break his word or his balls*.  This post is a reminder that this time of the year people make lofty promises and goals but by the end off the month these goals are not kept or forgotten.  Life is too short to wait.  Morgan Freeman says it best in The Shawshank Redemption:

Get busy living, or get busy dying.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…
  • Set a timer and write for 5 minutes.
  • Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.
  • Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. The back door to your blog if you want. But make it accessible.
  • Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post.
  • Link up your post below.
  • Visit your fellow bloggers and show some love.

Again, your post makes me think we’re kindred spirits. And I can’t believe I didn’t know you were Rachee’s sister! I love that Morgan Freeman quote. I use it a lot. Good for you for walking away from your loss with some action.

Jessica, your baby is too adorable! I think that we all grieve differently, and my goal is to grieve by celebrating his legacy and passing it on to my children.

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I think when you do lose someone special you begin to understand the importance of not taking each day for granted. I know I learned this when I lost my dad. And while I would wish him here, I’m thankful for the lesson that his death taught me. It’s (losing someone) bittersweet in that way.
