Yesterday I talked about using baking soda for health and beauty. Today I want to talk about baking soda around the house.
Cleaning.
Coffee Maker
I used a baking soda and vinegar rinse to clean my coffee maker. That was awesome! My coffee brewed much quicker and the taste was fantastic. There were little brown things floating in the water. I do clean my coffee pot but I was quite skeeved at the dirt I had not been capturing.
No wonder I needed more to get my day started!
Stove
There was some gunk stuck on the stove from many greasy dinners. I prepared the stove by clearing any loose debris and wiping it down. Then I made a paste of baking soda and water and smeared it all over the burners. After letting that sit for a bit, I added vinegar to the mix. It wasn’t quite as cool as making a volcano for science class, but it was close enough. The Mister cleaned it off and while there is still a little residue of both baking soda and grease, the stove is cleaner than it’s been in a while!
Laundry
Mount Laundry has met it’s match.
Just kidding. I’m still battling for control of my basement one load at a time. Using a half a cup of baking soda along with vinegar cuts down on the amount of product I use and also makes my clothes smell cleaner and look less dingy.
The Bathroom
I was extremely disappointed by the results of using baking soda in the toilet. Supposedly I was to pour a cup in the toilet, let it sit for an hour, flush and my toilet would be clean.
WRONG.
When I returned home from church, the toilet was still just as gross as when I left it. I had to resort to Clorox to clean. I have a poorly ventilated bathroom so I was looking forward to cleaning with less fumes. I’ll have to work on this cleaning solution.
For Freshness
Of course, there’s always the old trick of baking soda in the fridge. It truly does absorb the odor of food funk. The one thing I must say is that when baking soda is put into the fridge or freezer, it loses it’s potency if you were to use it for a grease fire.
Tomorrow, baking soda in the kitchen (hint it involves pumpkin!).
How have you used baking soda to clean? Leave your answers in the comments below!
I just tried this on the stovetop and it worked wonders on a spot that I have not been able to remove for a good year! THANKS!
Great ideas. I think somewhere I read that you should use it in conjunction with vinegar for the toilet. Could be wrong, but worth a try.
hmmm what is the process for putting it in the laundry? I would like to try that on my dad’s uniforms for work? 🙂 I’ll also have to try it on my stove as well! Thanks for this and I look forward to seeing what yummy thing baking soda has tomorrow 🙂
I use baking soda and vinegar for cleaning laundry and floors with good results. I have not tried it on my stove yet, so I am looking forward to doing that when I return from the market!
